This is one of the most sentimental pieces I've ever held in my hands. It gave me chills and warmed my heart when I imagined how Hugh's mother must have felt to receive this very special gift from her son for Christmas in 1916. The makers mark and date layout tell us that Hugh and his mother were living in England in 1916, which was an extremely deadly year for England during WWI. I know it must have been bittersweet for this mother to be able to spend Christmas with her grown son, knowing he might be called away at any moment. Inside the locket there are two photos, one of a child and one of a grown man. I presume that these are both photos of Hugh, past and present. The stamp 9ct bks & fts signifies that the back and front of the locket are solid 9ct gold and the inserts holding the photos in place and components of the hinges are gold filled. This locket is quite sizable, measuring 34.35mm (1.35") in diameter and 49.54mm (1.94") from bail to bottom edge. This is an amazing piece of history and a fantastic conversation piece. It is set with seed pearls and sapphires. There are some small dents and wear commensurate with age.
All pieces will be sent with tracking and insurance. A signature will be required for delivery for added security. Sales are final, however, if there is a problem, please contact me ASAP so I can resolve the issue. I want all of my customers to love these jewels as much as I do!.
